EXPERIENCE

Considerable experience with market research and marketing consultancy in the UK prior to resumption of academic career. Experience in conducting international research and significant understanding of multinational and multicultural issues. Has organized several international conferences and workshops and conducted contract research projects in several different countries.

 

ACHIEVEMENTS

Previously lived and worked in Sudan, Greece, South Korea, Australia and United Arab Emirates in market research and education. He has published numerous academic journal papers, non-academic papers and articles and books. His current research focuses on economic and social development of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region and his most recent book is the textbook for undergraduates The Greater Mekong Subregion. Journals in which his papers have been published include the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Cities, Singapore Journal of Tropical Geography, Pacific Review, International Journal of Social Quality, International Journal of Globalisation and Small Business, Society and Business Review, Emerald Emerging Market Case Study series and many more.

As Director of SIU Research Centre, clients have included Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (a four country quantitative study using the FAO’s Food Insecurity Experience Scale and, currently, a study of the East-West Economic Corridor in the Greater Mekong Subregion), Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Authority (quantitative and qualitative studies of low carbon tourism in various sites in Thailand), CAVAC (quantitative study of rural households in Cambodia concerning gender, livestock management and decision-making at the household level), Economic Research Institute for Trade (Lao PDR government) (cluster development in three sectors – organic rice, organic agriculture and white charcoal), the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) (an ongoing quantitative study of the use of mobile telecommunications and the internet in equitable value chain creation for farming households in Myanmar and Vietnam) and UNCTAD (ongoing consultancy in the area of special economic zones in the Greater Mekong Subregion).
