Review of Nakamura’s The Thief



Contemporary Tokyo is, I can confirm from our recent holiday there, a large metropolis full of people behaving in highly mannered ways as a means of navigating the hazards of daily life. The city is so large and modes of behaviour in conditions of advanced capitalism so atomizing that there is a great deal of space for able to slip between the cracks in society and, in the case of Fuminori Nakamura’s eponymous thief, plenty of scope for people to secrete themselves in the hidden parts of the world.
