Review of Bolano’s Monsieur Pain


The Chilean novelist Roberto Bolano has achieved literary prominence in the English speaking world comparatively recently. His best known-books include 2666 and The Savage Detectives, which are substantial pieces of writing that are reputed to develop their themes through an accumulation of images, details and connections moving forwards and backwards in time. Monsieur Pain, on the other hand (which is the first of his books I have read) is an early novella in which it may be that the author was still in the process of developing his style and method.
