Announcing: Bouchetoux, François, Lily Lavanchawee Sujarittanonda and John Walsh, “Adapting Journey to the West for Cinema: Stephen Chow’s Hilarious Epopee,” paper
presented at the International Conference on Literature to Cinema (NIT,
Durgapur: July, 2013).

Introduction

This paper deals with the cinematic adaptation of the Chinese classic “Journey to the
West”, about the pilgrimage of monk Tripitaka and his disciples. The recent film directed by Stephen show (2013) gives a new twist to this adventure. Chow was good enough to design four battles with kung-fu moves and many jokes. The giant fish in the opening sequence, a demon, suggests
environmental issues are on the agenda -this makes people aware of brilliant and endangered species that are living in deep oceans. The funniest episode is also there -a little girl, probably around 5 years old, is almost saved by valiant heroes. But the demon ends up devouring her. The giant fish episode is
a welcome addition to an otherwise boring classic.
