Review of Mythologies by Roland Barthes

There is a long tradition of seeing beyond what appears on the surface of things, of seeing things with eyes imbued by an ideology which helps to pierce the cloak of surface reality. Thomas Aquinas, for example, enumerated no fewer than nine different ways of interpreting texts and the things of nature from a religious perspective. Others have adopted political or mystical or wholly idiosyncratic approaches to the consideration of the external world.
