There are several monsters of legend that are really frightening – the vampire, the ferocious werewolf and the terrifying ghost for example – but there is only one monster that brings out the visceral horror in people. That is the zombie. To be sure, the thought of an undead creature that moans incoherently and wants to eat your brains is frightful enough but there is much more to it than that.

John Ajvide Lindqvist came to prominence with the English language translation of his vampire novel Let the Right One In, which has now been made into a film. This has emboldened publishers Quercus to produce this novel, translated from the Swedish and set in the Stockholm of 2002 by Ebba Segerberg. Handling the Undead is a zombie novel, of sorts – does the author have other manuscripts covering ghosts and werewolves? No doubt we shall find out in due course.
