Abstract:
The economy of Thailand has reached a turning point as the previous model, based on low-cost manufacturing, is no longer viable. The ability of Thai firms and entrepreneurs to step into the knowledge economy is inhibited by lack of important resources, not least of which is an appropriately educated labour force. The public sector should take a role in shaping the Thai economy so that it becomes more suited to taking the next step. The research reported on in this paper concerns one possible model for taking that next step: the online games industry in South Korea. The paper examines how that online games industry has been fostered by the Korean government and then considers what steps would need to be taken to replicate that success in Thailand. It is concluded that large-scale cultural and societal change would be required and that this would strain the resources of the state.
