Their importance lies not just in the wit and wordplay by which their various outrageous adventures are described but in the fact that they are, increasingly and increasingly obviously, controlled almost wholly by outside (and inside) forces.

Review of The First Book of Lankhmar by Fritz Leiber

Fritz Leiber’s heroes Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser are among the most well-known and influential of all of fantasy fiction. The former, a tall northerner based on a Scandinavian culture, soon becomes comrade with the latter, a short southerner from an Eastern Mediterranean style background. Together, they roam the world of Lankhmar, where the wilderness is full of unseen dangers and perils and the cities are much worse, combining as they do the worst of human nature with the many possibilities of witchcraft and magics most vile.
