Promoting renewable energy schemes is clearly a public good – that is, it benefits everyone because it reduces carbon emissions and hence relieves the pressure on climate change – and also has a personal benefit for those who can profit from them.

Iain Banks famously or notoriously publishes books set in the real world, often at a bit of a stretch, with those which are science fiction in nature. In part because of the recession, he has taken to hurrying up his schedule a little and this novel, Stonemouth, which is a real world book, seems to come quite closely on the tailcoat of his last – or perhaps the world is just turning more quickly as I become old.
