According to Pierre Bourdieu, every field of human activity is characterized by the uneven distribution of different types of ‘capital’ that are used to determine who is better or stronger or more powerful in that activity. Some activities are quite easy to quantify and calibrate: in sports, for example, it is generally clear which players or athletes are better than the others and by how much. In other cases, the distribution of capital is difficult to identify and calculate, especially for outsiders who lack sometimes arcane inside knowledge.
