What Else Do Academics Do?

In addition to the publications I listed in the preceding post, I thought I would let anyone interested know what else I did in the past year.

In terms of teaching, I taught two courses in each of the two semesters (Greater Mekong Subregion Studies, Business Ethics and Self-Development, Entrepreneurialism and Entrepreneurial Leadership) and also supervised a revolving list of a dozen PhD and Masters level candidates. These guys require varying amounts of supervision, guidance and, hence, time: some want to see me every week, some only once every couple of months.

Other things include:

Invited to become a Member of the Board of Trustees at Research Center ALTERNATIVE in Armenia.

Invited to join Scientific Board of Acta Universitatis Danubius, Oeconomica.

Appointed Guest Editor for a Special Issue of the Asian Academy of Management Journal concerning Asian Industrial Estates to be published in June, 2012.

Appointed Editor of the SIU Journal of Management.

Invited to join Board of Mentors at the BIMTECH Centre for Management Case Development.

Invited to join board of reviewers for Inderscience, International Journal of Business Performance Management.

Invited to and peer reviewed a paper for Society and Business Review (Emerald Publishing). Invited to peer review a second paper.

Invited to and peer reviewed three papers for Acta Danubius Oeconomica.

Invited to and peer reviewed a paper for the International Journal of Hospitality Management.

Invited to join the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Amity Business School.

Invited to join the WIF Monitoring Expert Group.

Invited to and peer reviewed ten papers for ICBC 2011.

Invited to and peer reviewed a paper for the Journal of Amity Business School.

Graduated six PhD candidates for doctoral degrees in Management Science at Shinawatra University: Dr Nittana Southiseng, Dr Sittichai Anantarangsi, Dr Pawana Techavimol, Dr Thavorn Thitthongkam, Dr William Wall and Dr Makararavy Ty.

Invited to and peer reviewed two papers for the African Journal of Agricultural Research.

In addition, I started up and published the first two issues of the SIU Journal of Management and also completed a fair amount of editing and translation work, on which my name does not appear.

2011 Publications

I like to keep track of items that I have had published and, at the end of the year, make a definitive list – this is a little more difficult than it sounds, because in the academic game, publications dated (in this case) 2011 may not come out for another couple of months. So, for academic papers in international journals, I have 27 confirmed publications but only 19 are actually in my metaphorical or actual hand.

I do have four national journal papers published and they are all safely here.

I participated in 14 international conference presentations, either individually (5) or with other authors (9).

For book chapters, I have two academic papers in books I have received and two more in books I have not yet received and which may be dated 2011 or 2012. I also have had 68 encyclopaedia articles accepted for publication in five different projects, which have yet to be published. I have also received another set of encyclopaedias in which six more of my articles appear.

Additional publications include seven stories published in anthologies of fiction, six of which are in print and one is online. Another half a dozen have been accepted for publication in due course. I have also had non-fiction essays published by BBC online and the German magazine Sudostasien. Some other peices have been accepted by the magazines World at War and Strategy and Tactics but I do not think they have been published yet.

In terms of online articles, I published apparently 272 articles at the Triond site and its affiliates. I also published 71 book reviews, including academic book reviews, which is a little disappointing.

I have set some targets for 2012 but (pointless) superstition  prevents me from talking about them until they are achieved.

Happy New Year or, if you prefer, sawatdee bi mai.
