Flood: Little Change Tuesday

From our point of view, there has not been much change again today. Those areas affected are still affected, although the area has widened slightly. There does not seem to have been any further movement of the water along Ladprao Road, although as I mentioned before it was claimed that the movement is now taking place underground.

The number of deaths attributed to the floods has suddenly jumped again, to 527, without any explanation of who these new victims are or how they have died. Given the way that figures are reported for (for example) deaths from road traffic accidents over New Year, it is not unusual for people to be a little sceptical about whether some (perhaps small number of) deaths are attirbuted to this large event when they might realistically be attributed to other causes. It is unlikely whether this will ever come to light.

Provinces a little further to the north, including Pathum Thani, are said to have slightly lower levels of flood water now and it is reported that life might return to normal there within ten days, although that sounds a bit like a guess. As ever, we shall see how it all turns out.

  1. Tooo many stories, and none of them good right now. Maybe you can shed some light for me. http://www.bangkokgis.com/flood/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=87appears to be a decent map but it only shows ‘over 30cm’ which is enough to give us the willies without being at all precise, Is this map credible? It said that soi 41 had less than 10cm on \sunday at 9am. On Monday morning Nation said soi 41 had 80cm. Wowow. My brother in law has been unable to get into 43 for a few days. Sounds like things got serious in a hurry. However you seem to be calm and dandy despite the map suggesting that a couple of sois away from you is over 3ocm. Which either casts doubt over the integrity of that map or is evidence that you are a braver man than I. Hope your feet are stil dry.

    • Bangkok conditions are always very localised. If our little soi were to flood, for example, the level would be twise as high at the bottom end where we live than the top end. The spread of the flood has, in recent days, followed the pattern that is being predicted. As far as I know, 43 is on the other side of Ladprao Road and is more affected by the canal overflowing – which has not yet affected our side.
