Factors Influencing Voting Intentions for Members of the Thai House of Representatives and Implications for the Integrated Marketing Communication Mix

Announcing:

Laohakosol, Wilaiporn and John Walsh, “Factors Influencing Voting Intentions for Members of the Thai House of Representatives and Implications for the Integrated Marketing Communication Mix,” Phuket Rajabhat University Academic Journal, Vol.6, No.2 (July-December, 2010), pp.58-79.

Abstract:

Political marketing communications is a somewhat new subject in Thailand compared to western countries such as the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia. Marketing principles are widely applied and openly used to communicate with voters in those countries. By contrast, it is not clear how voters in Thailand formulate their voting intentions. This study aims to investigate the voting intentions of a selected group of Thai voters in four different locations (Phuket, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen and Bangkok) during the period of February to May 2010 from a consumer point of view. Influencing factors are classified into two main categories: human and non-human factors. Overall, people respond that they base their votes on their own opinions and the policies espoused by parties and that they listen both to political messages and their peers. Interesting regional variations are also found. It is anticipated that the results will contribute to the blending of disciplines in political science, mass communication and marketing and attract further attention in the field. Results will also enable more effective use of political coomunications budgets by parties and candidates and promote, therefore, democracy in the country.

Critical Discourse Analysis: An Interpretation of Political Communications in the Election of Bangkok City Councilors (BC) Chatujak District 2, August 29th, 2010

Announcing:

Laohakosol, Wilaiporn and John Walsh, “Critical Discourse Analysis: An Interpretation of Political Communications in the Election of Bangkok City Councilors (BC) Chatujak District 2, August 29th, 2010,” paper presented at the 4th International Colloquium on Business and Management (Bangkok: January, 2011).

Abstract:

Political communications in Thailand started in 2480 B.E. (1937) when Thai people had their first opportunity to vote in a direct general election in the aftermath of the 1932 Revolution against the Absolute Monarchy. At this election, posters were widely used and contained interesting messages at a time when election rules and regulations were not sophisticated compared, at least theoretically, to the present situation which is now under the supervision of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT). More forms of communications have come to be in widespread use in electoral political procedures, in which electoral politics is defined as a series of competitions involving competing ideologies and policies in which candidates for office compete for the scarce resource of votes. Politicians use communication strategies to encourage eligible voters to vote for them, either through influencing personal or non–personal factors. This paper examines the communication strategies and messages employed by candidates in a selected area of Bangkok, using a Critical Discourse Method based on the ideas of Michel Foucault, in the light of interpretive discussion of how language–in–use, of written message and colour connotation , in whatever form and contents, reflects political relations. It is found that representation remains at quite a basic level and that this possibly reflects the nature of many voters, who lack political sophistication for a variety of reasons. The results should contribute to the body of knowledge available for analysis of political communications and marketing in Thailand in a systematic manner.

Impacts of Organizational Culture on Organizational Learning in Cambodia

Announcing:

Ty, Makararavy and John Walsh, “Impacts of Organizational Culture on Organizational Learning in Cambodia,” paper presented at the 4th International Colloquium on Business and Management (Bangkok: January, 2011).

Abstract:

Cambodia is composed of various ethnic and national minorities, including not just the Khmer majority but also Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Cham or Muslim and other groups. Many of the differences between groups were suppressed by previous political regimes, often with violence involved. No previous investigation has taken place concerning
the organizational culture of corporate entities in Cambodia with a view to investigating the personal and structural interactions between people. This paper reports on research that, in part, aimed to rectify that gap. Based on a questionnaire survey of 418 valid responses from individuals working in non-governmental organizations and private enterprises in Phnom Penh, the capital city, this study indicated a variety of responses to the issues of organizational learning within the organizations studied. Factor analysis revealed a series of dimensions useful in identifying and defining approaches towards learning and working. The authors established new terminologies to explain the components extracted from factor analysis. A conclusion and a number of recommendations are provided so as to assist in providing effective management within Cambodia and its organizations.

Map Ta Phut as an Exemplar of the Industrial Estates of Thailand

Announcing:

Pinyochatchinda, Supaporn and John Walsh, “Map Ta Phut as an Exemplar of the Industrial Estates of Thailand,” paper presented at the 4th International Colloquium on Business and Management (Bangkok: January, 2011).

Abstract:

The industrial estate has played an important part in the post-WWII economic development of Thailand, representing a focal point for the inward investment necessary to promote the version of the East Asian Economic Model employed in the country. Industrial estates have also been influential in shaping internal labour migration and in determining which economic activities provide competitive advantage in export sectors. The presence of the estates has not, however, been entirely positive since migration is often associated with social issues, because of excessive industrial pollution and because they made profitable otherwise unprofitable and undesirable activities. One of the largest and most significant industrial estates is that of Map Ta Phut, which is located on the eastern seaboard of Thailand. This estate has become particularly strongly linked with the presence of industrial pollution and with the protests of local residents who claim their health has been negatively affected by the various factories and facilities involved. This paper adopts Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate as an exemplar of all industrial estates of Thailand and uses it to identify the various characteristics and individualities of the Thai version of this institution. By doing this, lessons are drawn for both business practitioners and policy-makers concerning the regulation of pollution and other administrative activities, together with forward planning for employment and labour market upgrading.

Improving Competitiveness of the Thai Tourism Industry: Tourism Educational Department Perspectives

Announcing:

Thitthongkam, Thavorn and John Walsh, “Improving Competitiveness of the Thai Tourism Industry: Tourism Educational Department Perspectives,” paper presented at the 4th International Colloquium on Business and Management (Bangkok: January, 2011).

Abstract:

This study aims to investigate the perspectives of tourism department heads to current tourism education in Thailand, to inspect the positive and negative experiences in dealing with tourism education curriculum, to explore the possible ways to improve tourism education curriculum, and to discover how tourism industry establishes and maintains competitiveness. In-depth face-to-face qualitative interviews were conducted with 32 tourism educational department heads. The Snowball technique was employed. A semi-structured interview form in English was created as a research tool by the researchers. The results of the study revealed that tourism education in Thailand needs to focus on foreign language skills. Tourism curriculum needs to be reviewed. Various factors to be considered when developing tourism education curriculum were also pointed out. The factor of foreign language helps in the competitiveness of tourism industry to a significant extent. Decision makers in tourism industry are required to recognize the requirements of the market, courses to provide in the curriculum, the lecturers to teach, and realise what prospective employees want to study. Moreover, tourism industry product suppliers and marketers might cooperate in establishing and maintaining competitiveness to help make the country a preferred tourist destination by providing opportunities to internship students. Language is one of the crucial aspects in the course of action of developing and maintaining international tourists. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that the government should manage all the efforts to develop and promote tourism education since the strength of the tourism industry is also the driver of tourism education.

Creative Industries and Urban Structure: Seoul and Bangkok

Announcing:

Techavimol, Pawana and John Walsh, “Creative Industries and Urban Structure: Seoul and Bangkok,” paper presented at the 4th International Colloquium on Business and Management (Bangkok: January, 2011).

Abstract:

As states look to move towards the knowledge-based economy as a means of prolonging competitive advantages first obtained from labour-intensive, export-oriented manufacturing, the role of creative industries becomes increasingly important. These industries are variously defined and may be problematic in terms of their actual contribution to the overall economy but, nevertheless, facilitating their smooth functioning is held to be one of the state’s principal economic roles in the years ahead. This requires the creation of a form or forms of infrastructure that will support the creative industries and the fostering of links between them and the education system and labour market, such that the latter produce what is required by the former. The city in East Asia which has most consciously and actively pursued the means of causing the growth of creative industries is Seoul. This has necessitated the creation and implementation of a wide range of policies, in addition to affecting the physical growth of the city. As the authorities of Thailand’s city Bangkok look to the next round of growth beyond the East Asian Economic Model, the example of Seoul burns brightly. Yet there are various problems in following the Seoul example, ranging from the nature of the education system, the inability of metropolitan authorities to separate politics from planning decisions and the persistence of the value of low-labour cost manufacturing operations. This paper evaluates the nature of the Seoul model and the implications this has for the recreation of Bangkok in an environment in which the entire city may have to be abandoned to the elements.
