What Is Slapstick Comedy?

Slapstick comedy with the slapstick itself dates to the C16th Italian stage and the emergence of figures such as Harlequin. However, the concept of physical comedy with clownish figures being subject to mock violence on the stage as a result of saying something which is either very stupid or else so outrageous (but true) that it cannot be accepted by the rest of the cast or the audience.
